The Long Shot
A downloadable game
Made for Factory Reset Jam #2, whose theme is "Projectile".
Multiplayer
- With a partner, pick a distant year, ideally significant to both of you.
- Trade phones with your partner.
- Without seeing what the other person is doing, set an alarm in their phone for a date and time of day in that year.
- In my phone the calendar app lets you set significantly further ahead than the alarm app so maybe use that if you have it.
- Try to make the date and time significant but for separate reasons.
- As the title of the alarm, write a question, which the other person knows the answer to right now.
- imbue with significance any other elements the app lets you add, like a location or symbol or whatever.
- Return each others phones with the app closed, and make sure not to peek in the intervening years.
Much Later...
- When your alarm goes off, message your partner and let them know, but don't discuss details yet.
- When both of your alarms have gone off, arrange to meet up again, no matter how long it's been since you've seen each other, or whatever else has happened in your lives and in the world.
- Discuss the dates, times, questions, and answers you each posed. Do you remember what they mean?
- Discuss everything else that has happened in the intervening years, in your lives and in the world.
- Restart the process with a new future.
Singleplayer
- Pick a distant year significant somehow to you.
- Set an alarm for a date and time in that year.
- In my phone the calendar app lets you set significantly further ahead than the alarm app so maybe use that if you have it.
- Try to make the date and time significant but for different reasons.
- As the title of the alarm, write a question, which you do not yet know the answer to.
- imbue with significance any other elements the app lets you add, like a location or symbol or whatever.
- Close the app and be sure not to peek in the years that follow.
Much Later...
- When your alarm goes off, see if you can remember what the time and date and year and question mean. See if you can remember where this alarm came from.
- Do you know the answers to the question?
- Reflect on what has happened since you made the alarm, in your life and in the world.
- Repeat the process with a new future.
Other Rules
- You gain 1 point for each year in the future the alarm was set, 1 point for each thing you remember about your alarm, and 1 point for each time the process makes you laugh. Points are tallied at the reconnoiter phase.
- Make sure to still have the same phone by the time the future year arrives. If you absolutely have to get a new phone get a refurbished used one and transfer the alarm. If the alarm is lost before it goes off, you lose.
- If any of the players do not survive to the alarm going off, you all lose. You must all survive.
- If you forget what the alarm means, and ignore it, you don't lose but it's a little disappointing isn't it?

very cool concept John, and very clever way of working around the (maybe too restrictive) theme ahaha
